Monica Dogra is creating a buzz with her new fashion line

Every sub-industry in the media has a tendency to merge into one another and the tradition of celebrities foraying into fashion is nothing new. This happens in the west all the time, but one of the first Indian celebrities to launch their own fashion line is the very talented Monica Dogra. Starting her career as a musician, singer, model and actress, she is now focusing on launching designs that cater to the taste of the youth of the country. This line promises to be as unique as she herself is because it will be inspired by her life and her personality.

Monica Dogra

In her own personal sense of style, Monica is known to be distinctive and unique. And this is how she wants the youth of the country to be as well, she believes that your style should reflect who you are and that is exactly how each aspect of your outfit should be. India has very few fashion designers who have lines that are meant for a niche audience and yet are affordable. Monica plans on launching not only a fashion line but also a line of cool and fun accessories. A complete package is what the line promises to be for individualistic young women all over the country.

When asked about what inspired her to launch the line, Monica says that she had a lot of people who appreciated the way she dressed and put things together to create a unique style. These compliments and attention gave her the idea to trust her own fashion instincts and put together a line for the young modern woman. She is inspired by the hip and funky styles of the street and also their affordability. These are the elements that Monica Dogra has picked up and has begun the work on her line.

The youth of today are not ones to be coy and quiet, they are expressive and have found numerous ways to expressing themselves, including through the way they dress. No color, cut, style and fashion is taboo and the youth love to experiment with their look unabashedly. And this is the pulse that the fashion designers of today pick up, including Monica. Thus, the youth of today not only express but also inspire. They are the perfect muses for artists and fashion designers the world over. Thanks to the experimental youth, there is a freedom to be quirky and eclectic in fashion.

 Fashion Designers

Originally only asked to curate a fashion label, the hard working and passionate singer and actress decided to jump head on into the job and actually create the items of clothing herself. Fashion is an integral part of Monica’s life and she is paying homage to it in her own way. Offbeat and original are great ways of describing the kind of work that is expected from Monica Dogra, judging by her personal style and personality. Dogra’s line is one place where originality meets wearability and it promises to be one that excites fashionistas, especially the quirky and eclectic ones.

An A – list favorite Anamika Khanna

Good fashion has a clear sparkle; it silences dissent. Good fashion doesn’t need to grab attention; it inevidently gets all of it. And if that fashion is designed by a designer like Anamika Khanna, it rarely ceases any applause. Her initiation into fashion was more than 15 years back only because Theffolio store in Bangalore and Ogaan in Delhi bought what she created for the world of fashion.

She is a designer based in Kolkata, India. However hard to believe, the designer does not have any formal training in fashion designing and she is the first designer from India to launch an international label, and along with Manish Arora, the first to show at Paris Fashion Week.

She along with designer Manish Arora were invited to showcase the brand at the Paris Fashion Week in 2007, becoming the first fashion designers from India to do so. She is also the Associate Design member of Fashion Design Council of India.

She begins and ends her designs with the approach and use of traditional Indian and modern methods, a combination hardly used by many fashion designers. Her designs focus on including texturing with various embroideries in the clothing.Cliched exclamations fill the air when hershow ends. The applauses garnered by the audience are usually hearty, and a lot of them are from fashion industry stalwarts.

Like said before, good fashion always just gets attention without trying. She believes in similar logic which has led her to  not hire a PR Firm in the last 15 years of her career as a designer. Without a PR company to dress up her collection, she usesa word like “freedom” to explain the spirit and style of her collections.

When you dive more into the designer profile of Anamika Khanna, the more likely fashion – gyaan you will get. As the years pass by, her audience and clientele base have grown.

  •  In 2004, she received nearly 2 million pounds of funding to launch her international label Ana-Mika, the first ever for an Indian designer.

  • In 2005, the designer showcased her spring or summer collection at Wills India Fashion Week titled The Botanist.

  • In 2008, Anamika's collection at the HDIL India Couture Week was well received in the industry. The collection was inspired from the drape of Indian dhoti that was closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi. Fine cotton, chiffons, satins and georgettes were used for the collection. The line focused on cuts, drapes and comfort instead of embellishments.

  • In 2009, Khanna was the finale designer at Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Fall/Winter 09.

  • In 2010, Anamika along with other Indian designers participated in The India Premier London Fashion Week.

She has been an influential role player with Bollywood Actresses and their styling. In October 2012 issue, Sonakshi Sinha was on the Harper's Bazaar cover, styled by Anamika.

Recently, she dressed the saree dhoti outfit of Bollywood actress Soha Ali Khan at brother Saif Ali Khan's wedding. She has also styled the look of actress Sonam Kapoor for the movie Delhi-6 , Aisha and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

With such a great portfolio and design base to look at, it is obvious for awards and accolades to follow. Some of the many titles earned by Anamika Khanna are the Kingfisher Award for the fashion designer of the year 2004, Audi RITZ Icon Awards 2011, Damania Fashion Award, Texcellence Award.
